Football District Preview

Southern Boone Football begins the Class 3 District 4 Tournament tonight in Ashland. The Eagles host the Wright City Wildcats at 7 pm. The Eagles are 7-2 on the season and ranked #8 in Class 3 in the most recent poll. They are the 2nd Seed, only behind Moberly, in the District Tournament. The Eagles have won 5 of their last 6 with their only loss being to the #1 ranked team in Class 2 (Blair Oaks). Southern Boone finished the regular season with a big win against Boonville (43-27) to claim 2nd place in the Tri-County Conference.

Southern Boone’s opening round opponent Wright City is 2-7. The Wildcats have lost their last 6 games after opening the season 2-1. Despite their record, Wright City does have plenty of speed and athleticism that Southern Boone will have to be careful of. Southern Boone has played Wright City three times over the last two years. Southern Boone beat Wright City twice in 2016-17 (35-6 in the regular season and 49-0 in Districts) and once last year (Eagles defeated Wright City in a close, regular season match up 31-28.

Southern Boone has faced two other of their district opponents this year. The Eagles defeated Mexico 49-6 to start the season and the beat Fulton 54-7 in the 2nd game of the year.

Here is how the rest of the district opponents look;

The Moberly Spartans are seeded 1st in the district with a record of 6-3. Moberly has gone 2-0 against district opponents this year. They defeated Fulton 55-6 in the middle of the year and Mexico 34-7 in their last regular season game. Moberly had lost two in a row again Hannibal (21-41) and Kirksville (32-34) before defeating Mexico. There other loss of the season came in the opener to Smith-Cotton (14-21).

The Winfield Warriors are seeded 3rd in districts and boast a 6-3 record. Winfield is 1-0 against district opponents with a 43-0 defeat of Wright City to begin the season. Winfield’s losses are to St. Charles West (24-52), St. Charles (34-35), and again Lift for Life Academy (26-30).

The Mexico Bulldogs are seeded 4th in the district with a 5-4 overall record and a 2-2 record against district opponents. Mexico lost to top seeds Moberly and Southern Boone but defeated 5th seed and district opponent Centralia 35-14 a month ago an defeated Fulton 49-14 a couple of weeks ago. Mexico has lost 2 of its last 3 games.

The Centralia Panthers are seeded 5th in districts with a 5-4 record. The Panthers are 0-1 against district opponents with that loss being to their first round opponent Mexico. Centralia has won 2 of its last 3 since their loss to Mexico.

The Christian Eagles are seeded 5th in districts with a 4-5 record. Christian has not faced any of the other district teams during its regular season. Christian has lost 3 of its last 4 regular season games and finished the regular season with a tough loss to Father Tolton 48-51.

Wright City Warriors are the 7th seed in districts and will play our Southern Boone Eagles in the 1st Round. Wright City went 2-7 on the season and the only district opponent they faced was Winfield (losing 0-43). The Warriors have lost their last 6 games coming into districts.

The Fulton Hornets are the 8th seed in this district tournament with a record of 1-8. The Hornets went 0-3 against district opponents with losses to Moberly, Southern Boone, and Mexico. Fulton lost its first 8 games of the season but finished the regular season with a 48-6 victor over Mexico Military Academy.
