2019 Southern Boone Classic - Girls Preview
The 36th Annual Southern Boone Classic begins this week with the Girls side starting off the action on Monday. The Southern Boone Lady Eagles come into the tournament with a record of 9-8 and are the #3 seed in the tournament. The Girls side of the tournament was thrown off a little this year as Battle, Fatima, and Blair Oaks (last years champions) dropped out of the tournament. Boonville was added to the mix, but with just 6 teams this year the Classic will be a round-robin style tournament.
The Lady Eagles come into the tournament having gone 3-3 since the holidays but with all 3 losses being to tough opponents. The Lady Eagles recently fell to Blair Oaks (#10 in Class 3 in the MBCA Basketball Poll) 45-50 at Blair Oaks. Southern Boone lost to Class 5 Hickman the week before, at Hickman 57-74, and their other loss came to their opening opponent, the #2 seeded California Lady Pintos 53-57 in the Semi-Finals of the California Tournament. The two have faced each other twice this year with the Lady Pintos winning the first match up early in the season 56-36. California is currently #8 in Class 3 in the MBCA Basketball Poll. Southern Boone and California play at 6:30 tonight (Monday, 1/28)
Southern Boone will then match up with the 5th Seeded Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday (1/30) at 6:30 pm. Southern Boone and Harrisburg opened up the season against each other with the Lady Eagles soundly defeating the Lady Bulldogs 44-25.
Other teams in the Classic that Southern Boone has already played is the Fulton Lady Hornets. The Lady Eagles defeated Fulton 61-31 on 12/21. Depending on how Southern Boone does in those two games, they will either play for Consolation on Saturday (2/2) at Noon, for 3rd Place at 3 pm, or for the Championship at 6 pm. The Boonville Lady Pirates are the #1 seed in the Classic as they are 14-2 on the season and winners of 9 in a row. Boonville is currently ranked #7 in Class 4 in the MBCA Basketball Poll. Boonville has played 3 of the other teams playing in the tournament already. The Lady Pirates defeated Hallsville 64-19 and California 57-52 in the Tri-County Conference Tournament earlier in the season. Boonville defeated Fulton 73-25 in December (12/11) and just recently (1/24) defeated Hallsville again, 61-33, in a regular season Conference match up. Boonville will play Fulton (the 6th Seed) in their first game tonight at 5 pm and will then play Hallsville (the 4th Seed) on Wednesday at 8 pm.
The California Lady Pintos come in as the #2 seed. California is 14-3 on the season and have won their last 3 games after losing 43-59 to #7 in Class 2, Skyline. The Lady Pintos have defeated Southern Boone twice this season, lost to Boonville, and they have already defeated Hallsville 67-34 this past week. California will face Southern Boone tonight at 6:30 pm and will then face Fulton on Wednesday night at 5 pm.
The Hallsville Lady Indians are the #4 seed in the tournament. The Lady Indians are 6-12 on the season have lost 9 of their past 11 games. Hallsville lost to Boonville earlier in the year in the Tri-County Conference Tournament, defeated Harrisburg 55-36 in December in the Centralia Tournament and then defeated Harrisburg again 52-50 last week (1/22), and they lost to California in a regular season match-up last week (1/24) 33-61. Hallsville will face Harrisburg tonight at 8 pm and will then face Boonville on Wednesday at 8 pm.
The Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs come in to the Classic as the #5 seed with a 1-16 record. The Lady Bulldogs have lost their last 13 games coming into the tournament. Harrisburg lost to Southern Boone to start the season and has lost to Hallsville twice already this season. They have not played any of the other teams in the Classic. The Lady Bulldogs will start it off against Hallsville at 8 pm and then will face off against Southern Boone on Wednesday at 6:30 pm.
The Fulton Lady Hornets are the #6 seed in the tournament. The Lady Hornets are 2-14 on the season have lost their last 13 games coming into the Classic. Fulton lost to Boonville earlier in the year 25-73 (12/11) and also lost to Southern Boone 31-61 (12/21). The Lady Hornets will play Boonville tonight at 5 pm and then take on California on Wednesday at 5 pm.
The Girls side of the Classic will be a round-robin set up so the top two records will play for the Championship on Saturday (2/2) at 6 pm. The two next-best teams, will play for 3rd place at 3 pm, and the last two teams will play for Consolation at Noon
