2019 Southern Boone Classic - Boys Preview

The Girls started off the 36th Annual Southern Boone Classic and tonight the Boys side starts their games. The Southern Boone Boys come in as the #1 seed and two-time defending Champs. The Boys side also had a couple of departures with Linn and Fatima leaving this year. Carnahan High School joins the tournament this year but with only seven teams it means that Southern Boone will get an bye in the first round and will play the winner of the Fulton vs. California game.

The Eagles are 15-2 on the season and 5-2 since the Holidays, losing their first game of the season to Centralia (#10 in Class 3) 46-57 and then losing their first conference game of the season to Blair Oaks 33-51 (#9 in Class 3). The Eagles are coming off a good win against St. Elizabeth (57-51) the #8 team in Class 1. Southern Boone is automatically into the Semi-Finals with their first round bye and will play the winner of the Fulton vs. California game tonight. The Eagles have beat both teams earlier this year, defeating California in conference play early in December (76-56) and beating Fulton just before Christmas (60-52). Southern Boone has already played two other teams in the tournament, beating Harrisburg to open the season (63-23) and beating Boonville in the Tri-County Conference Tournament 61-50. The Eagles will play their 2nd Round game on Thursday at 6:30 pm.

The Boonville Pirates come in as the #2 seed in the Classic with a 9-7 record. Boonville is coming off a loss to Mexico last week (43-62) after winning three in a row. The Pirates have only played two of the teams in the tournament (Southern Boone and Hallsville). As discussed earlier, Boonville lost to Southern Boone in the conference tournament 50-61. The only other tournament team they have faced is Hallsville but the teams have already faced off against each other three times. Hallsville defeated Boonville in the Tri-County Tournament (59-58) and the Centralia Tournament (60-55) but defeated Hallsville in conference play last week 62-57. Boonville takes on Carnahan in the first round tonight at 7:30 pm.

The Hallsville Indians are the #3 seed in the tournament with a 9-9 record. The Indians have lost 7 of their last 9 games coming into the Classic, including a conference loss to California last week (79-86). Hallsville has faced three of the tournament teams, multiple times. Hallsville lost to California last week and also lost to them in the conference tournament earlier in the year (76-90). The Indians have played Boonville three times already this season (winning two of three) and then have played their first round opponent twice already. Hallsville faces off against old Little Dixie Conference rival Harrisburg in the first round of the Classic. Hallsville defeated the Bulldogs 64-30 early in December and then pulled out a 4 point win just last week (67-63). The two teams will tip off at 9 pm tonight.

The Fulton Hornets come in at the #4 seed this year. The Hornets are 7-7 and have lost 4 of their last 5 games and have had three games postponed due to weather. The Hornets have played three of the teams in this years Classic. Fulton lost to Boonville early in December (72-75), lost to Southern Boone just before the Holidays (52-60) and then defeated California 92-87 in the California Tournament. Fulton will square off in a re-match with California in the 1st round. The two teams play tonight at 6 pm.

The California Pintos are the #5 seed in the Classic this year. The Pintos are 10-7 but have won 3 of their last 4 games. California is coming off a 62-57 victory over Hallsville to avenge an early loss to them in the Tri-County tournament (76-90). Other tournament teams that California has played is Southern Boone (losing 56-76) and Fulton (losing 87-92 in their own tournament). California and Fulton will face off again in the 1st round tonight at 6 pm.

The Harrisburg Bulldogs are the this years #6 seed in the tournament. The Bulldogs are 5-11 on the season and 3-3 since the Holidays. Harrisburg is coming off a loss to Hallsville in their last game (63-67) and had lost to them also in early December (30-64). The Bulldogs started off the year with a 23-63 loss to Southern Boone. Harrisburg will have a re-match with Hallsville in the 1st round of the tournament tonight at 9 pm.

The Carnahan Cougars come to the Classic for the first time and are the #7 seed in the tournament. The Cougars are 2-18 on the season but play a very tough St. Louis schedule. The Cougars have not faced any of the teams in the Classic prior to the tournament and have lost 3 in a row and 18 of their last 19 after beginning their season with a victory over Transportation and Law. Carnahan will play Boonville in the 1st round tonight at 7:30 pm.

The Boys side of the Classic will play tonight, with 2nd round games on Thursday (1/31). Medal games will be played on Saturday (2/2), with the Consolation game being at 1:30 pm, 3rd place game being at 4:30 pm and the Boys Championship game tipping at 7:30 pm.
