Girls Basketball District Preview
The Southern Boone Lady Eagles get ready for District play today as they take on the Fatima Comets at 7 pm in Linn. The Lady Eagles are coming off a tough stretch of play having lost their last 5 games against some tough competition but are looking to use to make a splash in Districts and make their way to the championship. The Lady Eagles are the #6 seed in Districts with a regular season record of 11-14. They will face the Fatima Lady Comets in the 1st Round of the Class 3, District 9 Tournament. Southern Boone and Fatima faced off earlier in the season with Fatima making a 2nd Half comeback to defeat the Lady Eagles 59-56 in Westphalia. Senior Carrie Ponder had a monster game by scoring 15 points and grabbing 15 rebounds against the Lady Comets.
Southern Boone has faced two other possible District opponents. The first one is the Blair Oak Lady Falcons who the Girls could play in the next round of Districts. Southern Boone traveled to Blair Oaks in late January to take on the Lady Falcons. Southern Boone got down early in the game but fought their way back before losing 45-50 to Blair Oaks. Jersee Wren and Dani Post led the Lady Eagles with 9 points each in the low scoring affair.
The other District opponent the Lady Eagles faced this year is the #1 seed, California Lady Pintos. The Lady Eagles and Lady Pintos faced off three times this year (Tri-County Conference play, California Tournament, and in the Southern Boone Classic) with the Lady Pintos winning all three games. California won the first game 56-36 in Ashland but the Lady Eagles came back at the California Tournament to lose a close one 53-57. California won their last meeting in the Classic 63-50. Lexi Ussery led the Lady Eagles in scoring in two of the three games and scored double-digits all three games.

The #1 seed is the California Lady Pintos as mentioned above. The Lady Pintos are 17-7 on the season and ranked #10 in the latest MBCA Poll. California has played four of the other District opponents during the regular season, going 5-1 against them. They beat Southern Boone three times, defeated the #3 seeded Fatima Lady Comets in January 48-46, and the #3 seeded South Callaway Lady Bulldogs 55-39 in December. California lost to the #2 seeded Blair Oaks Lady Falcons in the last game of the regular season 44-45. California comes into Districts having lost their last 3 games, their longest losing streak since 2016. They plan Linn at 5:30 pm in the first round.
The #2 seeded Blair Oaks Lady Falcons come into Districts with a 19-6 overall record and a 7-0 record against District opponents. Blair Oaks has played everyone in the tournament with the exception of the North Callaway Lady Thunderbird’s. Blair Oaks defeated California 45-44 to close out the regular season, defeated Fatima 78-56 in December, South Callaway 49-48 a couple of weeks ago, Father Tolton 48-40 at the end of January, Southern Boone 50-45, and they have beaten Linn twice this year (61-16 in December and 51-15 in the Fatima Tournament in January). They have won their last 7 games coming into Districts and will play North Callaway at 4 pm in the first round.
The Fatima Lady Comets are the #3 seed in Districts. Fatima is 18-6 on the season and 3-3 against District opponents. Fatima is 2-0 against the #8 seeded Linn, defeating them 54-25 in the Linn Tournament and 54-25 in the last game of the regular season. The Lady Comets also defeated Southern Boone early in the season 59-56. Fatima lost to the #1 seed California 46-48, the #2 seed Blair Oaks 56-78, and then lost to the #4 seed South Callaway 69-72. The Lady Comets come into Districts winners of 5 of their last 6 games. Fatima will face Southern Boone at 7 pm in the first round.
The #4 seeded South Callaway Lady Bulldogs come into Districts with an 18-6 overall record and a 4-2 record against District opponents. South Callaway defeated the #7 seeded North Callaway twice this year (77-32 at the beginning of the season and 56-34 in the South Callaway tournament), defeated Linn 65-43 last week, and defeated Fatima 72-69 to end the regular season. South Callaway lost to California 39-55 and Blair Oaks 48-49. South Callaway will face Father Tolton in the first round at 8:30 pm.
The Father Tolton Lady Trailblazers come into Districts as the #5 seed, with a 11-14 overall record and just one game against a District opponent. Father Tolton faced Blair Oaks at the end of January and lost 40-48. The Lady Trailblazers come into Districts on a 3 game losing streak and will face South Callaway in the first round at 8:30 pm.
The #7 seed is the North Callaway Lady Thunderbird’s. They come into Districts with a 11-13 overall record and have only played one other District opponent, South Callaway. South Callaway defeated North Callaway 77-32 to start the season and 56-34 in the South Callaway Tournament. North Callaway has won 6 of their last 8 regular season games heading into their first round game against Blair Oaks at 4 pm.
The #8 seed is the Linn Lady Wildcats. Linn comes into Districts with a record of 7-18 overall record and a 0-5 record against District opponents. Linn has lost twice to Blair Oaks (16-61 and 15-51) and Fatima (25-54 in the Linn Tournament and 25-54 to end the regular season). They also lost to South Callaway 43-65 last week. Linn comes into Districts having lost 12 of their last 13 games. They will face California at 5:30 pm.
