Boys Basketball District Preview
The Southern Boone Eagles are ready for some District Basketball and hoping they don’t have any more delays due to the weather. Southern Boone takes on the South Callaway Bulldogs tonight at 7 pm in Linn. The Eagles are 22-2 on the season, come into Districts on a 8 game winning streak, and are currently ranked #9 in Class 3 by the MBCA. The Eagles are the #3 seed in this years Class 3, District 9 Tournament. In what has become a tradition, Southern Boone’s District is stacked with several ranked teams and tough competition all-around (6 of the 8 teams have winning records).
Southern Boone comes into Districts with a 5-1 record against the field. The Eagles won two games against California (76-56 early in the year and 74-54 in the Southern Boone Classic), and won games against Linn (52-49) and Fatima (73-51) early in the season. Southern Boone split the two games it had against the #2 seeded Blair Oaks Falcons (60-52 win in the Tri-County Conference Tournament Championship and a 33-51 loss at Blair Oaks). The loss against Blair Oaks came without the services of guard Rece Gilmore. The last time South Callaway and Southern Boone played was in the first round of Districts during the 2016-17 season (Southern Boone won 77-45).
Here is a quick look at the other teams in the Class 3, District 9 Tournament;
The #1 seed is the Father Tolton Trailblazers who are 16-6 on the season and ranked #7 in Class 3. The Trailblazers come into Districts losers of their last two games (53-55 loss to Jennings and a 56-74 loss to Cardinal Ritter). Tolton has only played one of the District opponents (Blair Oaks) prior to the post season. The Trailblazers beat Blair Oaks twice (68-61 early in the season and 71-65 in the Machen’s Great 8 Holiday Classic). Father Tolton plays Fatima in the 1st Round at 5:30 pm. The Trailblazers defeated St. James last year to win the District.
Blair Oaks comes into Districts as the #2 seed with a 20-5 record and winners of their last 14 games. The Falcons are 4-3 against teams in this years District Tournament. Blair Oaks lost twice to Father Tolton and split games with Southern Boone. The Falcons also defeated California (88-58 last week), Fatima (65-32 in December), and their First Round Opponent Linn (58-40). Their rematch against Linn is the first game tonight at 4 pm.
The North Callaway Thunderbird’s are the #4 seed in this years District. The Thunderbird’s are 19-6 on the season and 2-0 against District opponents. North Callaway played South Callaway twice, defeating them 48-35 in December and 50-47 in the South Callaway Tournament in January. North Callaway has won 6 of their last 7 games coming into Districts. They will play California at 8:30 pm tonight.
The #5 seed is the California Pintos. California is 15-9 on the season and 0-3 against District opponents. The Pintos have lost to the #2 seed Blair Oaks (58-88) in their last game of the regular season and twice to the #3 seed Southern Boone (56-76 and 54-74). The Pintos will play North Callaway at 8:30 pm.
The South Callaway Bulldogs are the #6 seed in the District. The Bulldogs are 12-13 on the season and 2-2 against District Opponents. South Callaway has lost twice to North Callaway (34-48 and 47-50) and have defeated Linn (59-58 in December) and Fatima (78-69 in January). The Bulldogs have lost 3 of their last 4 coming into Districts and play Southern Boone at 7 pm tonight.
The host school for Districts, Linn, is this years #7 seed. The Wildcats are 15-10 on the year and 2-3 against District teams. Linn has defeated Fatima twice on the season (56-40 in the Linn Tournament and 57-50 in their last regular season game). Linn has lost to Blair Oaks (40-58), Southern Boone (49-52), and South Callaway (58-59). They come into Districts on a 3 game win streak and will face off against Blair Oaks at 4 pm today.
The #8 seed is the Fatima Comets. Fatima is 9-14 on the season and 0-5 against four of the District teams. The Comets lost twice to Linn (40-56 and 50-57) and lost to Blair Oaks (32-65), Southern Boone (51-73), and South Callaway (69-78). Fatima has 7 of their last 9 coming into Districts and will face off against Father Tolton at 5:30 pm.
