2019 Southern Boone Boys Soccer Preview
The Southern Boone Boys Soccer team begin the 2019 season looking for their 10th straight District Championship and returning to the State Final Four and a State Championship. The Eagles are coming off a 20-5 season and a trip to the Quarterfinals. The Eagles lose Brett Brookshire (All-District & All-Region), Brandon Wagner (All-District), Austin King (All-District), and Ricky Weisner (All-District) from last years team but they still have their big guns.
Rece Gilmore returns as the Eagles leading scorer the last two years. Rece was All-District, All-Region, and All-State last year and was named the Region’s Offensive Player of the Year. Rece led the Eagles with 34 goals and led the team in assists with 16. Alongside Rece will be Rajesh Bennett who handed out 15 assists last year himself. Working along with this duo are returning starters Sam Bonderer (All-District) and Trenton Roney (All-District, All-Region, & All-State) in the midfield.
On defense, the Eagles will be led by Lleyton Shoot (All-District) on the back line as he will look to help guide some of the new defenders stepping in this year for the Eagles. Along with Lleyton is Southern Boone’s Iron Curtain Goalkeeper Nick Grabner (All-District, All-Region, and All-State). Nick recorded the 2nd most Shutouts in a Season at Southern Boone last year with 15.5. Nick is a 2-time All-Stater at Goalkeeper and was the Region’s Goalkeeper of the Year last year.
Beyond the team goal of another District Championship and the road to the Final Four there are some individual achievements to watch for this year. Goalie Nick Grabner I’m sure will be eyeing the Season Shutout record held by Coach Tyler Kierim (19 in 2007) and the Career Shutout record held by Isaac Wren (42) as Nick only needs 12 to pass him (Nick has 30.5). On the offensive side, Rece Gilmore only needs 3 assists to the All-Time leader at Southern Boone. Rece sits at 45 while Jacob Moore holds the record with 47. Rece is 4 goals away from 2nd place All-Time in Goals scored with 76. Currently Landon Bartel is 2nd place with 79. Jacob Moore is the All-Time leader with 138.
The Eagles start off the season with the inaugural match of the new Capital City High School in Jefferson City today at 10 am. Here is the early schedule for the Eagles;
